She spent what seemed like forever trying to figure out a way around the tall fence without going on the road. According to her parents, the road was forbidden. But, what was she worried about? It’s not like they could see her from where she was. The fence stood buildings away from her apartment building.
Even though she knew she would be breaking the rules by going onto the other side of that fence, the urge still hit her like a pregnant women and food. But, why did she want to be on the other side so badly? There was a playground that was nearly a million times better than the one in her apartment complex. Or, that’s what her friend told her.
So, after standing and staring at the fence for so long she decided to follow the fence. And, if she was lucky, she would find a crack or space under it; something small enough for her to crawl or fit through.
After following the fence for something that felt like nearly a mile in her shoes, the road began to come closer and closer into her sight. By this time, her thoughts believed that there was no way to the other side of the fence. Well, that was what she thought until she saw a part of the fence wiggle. The movement of the fence wasn’t something that the wind could blow and shake. It was a wiggle that could only be done by someone on the other side.
With the plank of the fence beginning to loosen before her eyes, she began to panic. She thought, ‘what if I get in trouble?’ and ‘what if they knew I was trying to go on the other side?’ But, with her panic she also felt curiosity. So, regardless of the trouble she would be in, she helped the stranger on the other side of the fence and pulled.
The pull loosened the plank enough for her to fall backward and peal it right off. She stared blankly into the sky, losing thought of what she was doing with the impact. And, after a few seconds that felt too long, she remembered what she was doing and looked at the opening in the fence.
“Are you okay?” said the boy that stared at her through the opening of the fence.
She got up, put the wooden plank down, and stared at the boy a little too long as he repeated his concern. He was about the same age as her but taller.
“Yes, I’m fine,” she said shyly. She was always shy when it came to strangers, especially when it was a cute boy that was about the same age.
“Oh, okay. I thought no one was on the other side,” he said. “This is my secret opening.”
“Where are you going?” she asked him.
“I’m going to the playground over there” said the boy as he pointed to the playground that was behind the building.
“Have you been on this side before?” she asked curiously.
“Yes, lots of times. My playground is three billion times not as fun as the one here,” he exaggerated.
She thought about this for a second and debated on whether she could trust his judgement. Her reason for going on the other side of that fence was the same he had for coming on this side.
“But my friend told me the one on that side was better,” she said refering to the other side of the fence.
“It’s not that fun,” he said. “I like the one on this side but if you want to go to my playground, you can.”
The boy stepped around her making his way toward her playground as she watched him.
“Wait!” she shouted as she caught up to him.
“What?” he asked as he turned around.
“What about the wood?” she said refering to the wooden plank.
“You put it back so no one knows we went through it,” he said.
It was nearly years now from the first moment they met. He asked her to meet him at his playground which is exactly what she did. She did anything for him and liked him a lot but she knew that nothing more could grow between them.
As she swang on the swing waiting for him, she began to become impatient. It felt like nearly an hour when only ten minutes have gone by. But, as her pace on the swing began to slow, she saw him.
Her heart began to skip beats and nervousness took over. He held something behind his back but she couldn’t make out what it was. He greeted her with a smile that could out shine the sun.
“Hey,” she said with a smile.
“What’s up?” he said approaching closer to her.
“I don’t know. You tell me,” she said as she sat in the swing that was no longer swaying. “You were the one who asked me to come here and I’m here. What’s up?”
“So, I was thinking,” he said kneeling onto one knee. “I’ve known you for who knows how long. Do you remember the first time we met?”
“Of course I do,” she said as the images of the fence incident began to play in her mind.
“I would never have thought that we would come this far, especially since we met by a fence we wanted to get through. And, even though that moment didn’t seem like something so important to us when we were little, it is now,” he said seriously as he looked into her eyes.
She had no idea what to think or say. The shock went through her as if she was finding out one of his deepest secrets, just like how the fence was his secret when they were younger.
“I know you weren’t expecting me to say things like this and it took me a while to realize how I really felt about you but I love you. You’re my best friend but I want you to be something more,” he said as he took her hand and placed a single perfect rose in it. “Will you be mine?”
Her eyes could not believe what was happening. But, the only thing she could do was smile and say, “yes.”
